Target fish & season

Barramundi/Mangrove jack/Snapper/GT/Spanish mackerel

Barramundi has two peak seasons per year. The "Run-off" of March-April (when the floodwaters from the end of the Wet recede) is considered the best, with frenzied feeding at creek mouths. The other is the "Build-up" from October-November to early December. GT (giant trevally) school readily and are easier to target during the run-off and the pre-Wet build-up. In the Dry of May-September the barramundi bite drops off, but the fine weather makes offshore blue-water fishing strong (beware of the easterly trade winds).

How to fish here

Maningrida in Arnhem Land lies about 300 km northeast of Darwin, a remote area accessible only by fly-in. You target barramundi in untouched systems like the Liverpool and Tomkinson rivers. The best times are the post-wet run-off (March-April) and the late dry season (October-November), when barramundi feed hard on the swollen freshwater inflows. Mangrove jack and Spanish mackerel round out the mix in this fly-in, stay-based fishing.
