Batang Ai is a dam-created lake deep in the interior of Sarawak, and the gateway is Kuching (KCH). From Kuching you drive about 4 to 4.5 hours by road to reach the jetty at Batang Ai Lake. From there you transfer to a longboat to head to the lodges and longhouses on the lake and upstream, making it a two-stage access.

Snakehead (toman)
The best season for freshwater fishing is generally the dry season, May to September (especially June to August). During this period the weather is stable, boat travel on the lake and trekking are easier, and it is considered the peak time for outdoor activities. Conversely, the northeast monsoon period from November to February brings a lot of rain. Note that for targeting Sebarau (hampala), higher water levels are considered more favorable, and the catch is affected by the dam's water level and rainfall.

Batang Ai is a hydro dam lake in interior Sarawak and a top spot for big toman (giant snakehead, Channa micropeltes). Toman have the habit of rising to the surface every few minutes to gulp air, and the standard tactic is to hit that split second with topwater poppers and stickbaits. Big ones stretch to the 40 lb class, and the draw is their savage strike right against the structure.
