Where it is & getting there

Getting there (from the nearest int'l airport) source

Betong is a mountain town in Yala Province at Thailand's southernmost tip, about 20 km from the Malaysian border. The gateway is Betong Airport (BTZ, about 12 km east of town), which opened in 2022, but scheduled service is mainly limited light-aircraft routes from Hat Yai (HDY), so flights are few. Most travelers drive south from Hat Yai. Because of the mountain roads, the trip takes a while. It serves as a base for fishing the surrounding streams and rivers, as well as Bang Lang Reservoir (a dam lake) to the north.

Target fish & season

freshwater snakehead/Sebarau(Bang Lang Dam)

Freshwater fishing in the surrounding streams and rivers and in Bang Lang Reservoir (a dam lake) is possible year-round. The dry season around January to February, when there is relatively little rain and the weather is stable, is easier to get around and is a good target as a time with little flooding and turbidity. During the rainy-season peak from August to December, conditions tend to worsen due to flooding and turbidity.

Climate & what to wear source

As an elevated mountain town, it is hot and humid year-round but somewhat more comfortable than the lowlands. There is plenty of rain, with annual precipitation exceeding about 2,200 mm, and the rainy season peaks from August to December (especially November). In the early morning, mist and a sea of clouds settle over the mountains (the Aiyerweng viewpoint is famous; best seen from November to February). Short sleeves are enough during the day, but a light jacket and rain gear are reassuring for early-morning cloud-sea viewing or during the rainy season.
