Whale sharks: In Cenderawasih Bay (Nabire / Kwatisore Bay) they gather around the bait of local bagan fishing and can be encountered year-round (resident, not migratory). However, the best season for diving tours is the dry season of June–October, especially July–October, when the sea is calm, visibility is high, and operations are stable. November–May is the rainy season, with rough seas and many operators suspending service. GT (inshore/reef): The reefs and atolls around the Biak Islands are good fishing grounds, and the calm dry season is easier to target (note that the bay area favors tidal cycles and dawn/dusk year-round).

From Nabire you push deep into jungle rivers for Papuan black bass and spot-tail bass. They lurk in both brackish and freshwater rivers, and their trademark is a single blistering run that can snap a rod. The bite comes in low light morning and evening and under cloud cover, and the classic approach is a surface explosion on big, heavy-duty poppers and other topwater. The rivers fish best in the dry season (roughly Apr-Aug), when water clarity is steady. On the Cenderawasih Bay side you can also enjoy GT popping.
