Where it is & getting there

Getting there (from the nearest int'l airport) source

Busan is a port city in southeastern South Korea. The gateway is Gimhae International Airport (PUS), with many direct flights from across Japan (Fukuoka, Osaka, Tokyo, etc.). From Fukuoka, you can also cross via the regular Camellia Line ferry between Hakata Port and Busan Port. From the Seoul area, take the KTX (high-speed rail) to Busan Station. Getting around the city is convenient by subway and the Busan-Gimhae Light Rail Transit, giving access from the airport and Busan Station to the coastal fishing bases (Yeongdo, Taejongdae, Haeundae, etc.).

Target fish & season

Yellowtail amberjack/Amberjack/Hairtail/Squid/Jigging・Popping

Rockfish (mebaru) are best from late autumn to spring, with both numbers and size catchable especially in early spring. Pelagic fish (yellowtail amberjack, Japanese amberjack, etc.) peak in their migration in autumn (September-November), a prime season for shore jigging. Red seabream is best during the spawning run in spring (March-May). Squid (such as bigfin reef squid) egging is popular in autumn. Scorpionfish (rockfish species) can be caught year-round but are at their best from winter to spring. Overall, spring and autumn are best, with mild weather and high fish activity, and early morning and evening are prime times. In Busan, Taejongdae, Yeongdo, and the east breakwater of Gamcheon Port are good spots.

How to fish here

Sendo (Saengdo), Nam Island and the Hyeongje Islands near Busan have long been prime jigging grounds for amberjack and yellowtail. Best is late autumn into the winter of Dec-Jan, when meter-class, 15-20kg fish drop from the surface to deeper water and can be taken offshore. Winter fish chase slim baitfish like hairtail and halfbeak, so long jigs work well. Boat fishing itself runs year-round.
