The global peak for black marlin (giant black marlin) is September-December. Large females gather from mid-September at the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef (about 150 miles from Cairns to Lizard Island) to spawn, with the peak in October-November, and most of the big fish leave by early December. GT (giant trevally) can be targeted year-round but high season is summer (the warm-water period); during the September-November marlin period there are also good chances with poppers and the like on the spawning schools along the reef edge.

A mecca where some of the world's largest black marlin (700-1,300 lb females) gather. The season runs Sep-Dec, peaking Oct-Nov, with the big fish thinning out by early December. From Lizard Island and the Ribbon Reefs out to the shelf edge (about 150 nautical miles), the mainstay is heavy bait-trolling with 130 lb tackle and Tiagra reels. Tag-and-release and ringed hooks protect the resource.

A tropical climate that is warm year-round. The dry season (May-October) is sunny with low humidity and pleasant, ideal for reef sightseeing and game fishing. The wet season (November-April) is hot and humid with frequent squalls (afternoon rain), and rainfall is heaviest around February.
