Where it is & getting there

Getting there (from the nearest int'l airport) source

The gateway to the Bheemeshwari/Galibore camps on the Cauvery River (Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary), the holy ground of mahseer fishing, is Bengaluru (BLR). It is about 100–102 km via Kanakapura Road, roughly 2.5–3.5 hours by car. Turn left at Halaguru (Halagur) from the Malavalli direction and enter the village road on the sanctuary side. The trunk road is in good condition, but the village road leading to the sanctuary tends to develop more potholes and get rough during the monsoon season.

Target fish & season

Mahseer/carp/MahseerC&R

Generally, the best season for mahseer fishing is considered to be autumn (September–November, especially September in Karnataka), when the rainy season ends and the river runs clear, and spring (March–May), when the waters begin to rise. However, at present, by directive of the Karnataka Forest Department, fishing (including joy fishing) is banned within wildlife sanctuaries such as the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, and the fishing formerly conducted at Galibore/Bheemeshwari—including the conservation-oriented catch-and-release culture—is subject to restriction or suspension. Confirming the latest permit and regulation status with the local camps (Jungle Lodges, etc.) before traveling is essential.
