Target fish & season

Squid/Hairtail/Snapper/Grouper/Billfish

Sailfish are said to peak around the southern Gulf of Thailand and Chumphon from November to February. Meanwhile, offshore migratory fish such as yellowfin tuna and dogtooth tuna are best targeted from March to September, when the sea calms (because during the southwest monsoon the Malay Peninsula shields the upper part of the gulf). Note that, compared with the Andaman Sea side, the gulf side has a somewhat lower encounter rate for billfish and large tuna.

How to fish here

A fishery targeting the Chumphon Islands out in the Gulf of Thailand, headlined by squid. The squid boats carry big green fishing lights, and the season runs roughly October to March. The mix is wide, from reef fish like grouper and snapper to pelagics like barracuda and mahi-mahi. The best window is the October-May dry season, when larger boats run overnight trips. The draw is emptier water than the more touristed areas.
