Where it is & getting there

Getting there (from the nearest int'l airport) source

The gateway is Darwin (DRW). The Cobourg Peninsula / Garig Gunak Barlu National Park is an isolated land area, and access to lodges such as Seven Spirit Bay is basically by small-aircraft charter. Self-drive 4WD via Arnhem Land is possible only in the dry season, but a transit permit from the Northern Land Council (NLC) plus NT Parks permits and a camping permit are mandatory.

Target fish & season

GT/Spanish mackerel/Grouper

For barramundi, the best times are October〜November and March〜April when water temperatures rise and they feed aggressively (the transition between dry and wet seasons). Fishing camps generally operate around April〜May and September〜November. GT (giant trevally) bite well in the dry season around rocky reefs and sandy drop-offs, with the early to middle of the rising tide being the prime time. Overall the dry season (May〜Oct) offers stable access and the best conditions.

How to fish here

For GT Spanish mackerel Grouper The classic approach is popping/casting a diving pencil or popper across the surface; when fish are shy, jigging a heavy metal jig also works.
