Where it is & getting there

Getting there (from the nearest int'l airport) source

The gateway is Darwin International Airport (DRW). Daly River (Nauiyu community) is located about 220km south of Darwin, roughly a 2.5–3 hour drive. Head south on the Stuart Hwy, then turn onto Daly River Road toward the Nauiyu community and fishing camps (such as Woolianna). Daly River Road was sealed up to the river crossing in 2007, allowing all-weather access, but during the Wet season it can be closed due to flooding.

Target fish & season

Barramundi

The best season for barramundi is the post-wet-season period of falling water levels known as the "Run-off," roughly late February to May (especially March–April). As water recedes from the floodplains, baitfish and crustaceans flow out toward the creek mouths, and barramundi lie in wait and feed aggressively on them, making it a prime opportunity (the start and end timing shifts between January and May depending on the scale of the wet season). The Daly River has abundant structure such as sandbars and rock bars, and trolling is also good from April to June. Fishing from a boat or shore is also possible during the dry season.
