Target fish & season

GT/Billfish/Tuna/Wahoo/Snapper/Grouper

GT (giant trevally) can be targeted year-round, but the cooler April-August period is especially good. Billfish are in high season during the warm September-May; sailfish are seen in numbers along the Ningaloo coast in August-September and in Exmouth Gulf in October-December. Blue marlin peak in October-March, and black marlin in March-August.

How to fish here

The signature game here is topwater along the edge of Ningaloo Reef, casting poppers for GT, red bass, coral trout, and queenfish. GT can be targeted year-round, but the clear, calm water of late winter is an especially good window. Black, striped, and blue marlin generally peak from Oct-Dec.
