Where it is & getting there

Getting there (from the nearest int'l airport) source

The gateway is Port Moresby (POM), the capital of Papua New Guinea. From here, take an Air Niugini domestic flight into Western Province, basing yourself in Kiunga (UNG), a port town on the upper Fly River, or in Daru (DAU), an island in the estuary delta. From either, you continue by a fishing lodge's shuttle boat or a charter vessel to spots on the Fly River's main channel, tributaries, and floodplains. Travel relies mainly on small regional airports and charter flights, and is subject to flight frequency and weather, so allow extra time in your schedule.

Target fish & season

★Papuan bass/Barramundi/GT

The best season is the dry season, roughly May-October (core June-August). In the dry season, rainfall decreases and water levels drop, the river clears of mud and the water becomes clear, so fish concentrate around fallen timber and reed edges and become easier to target. Papuan bass (black bass) fish well during the low-water period of the dry season (roughly May-October), and barramundi are also considered to peak from June to October. In the rainy season (December-April), high water and muddiness lower the conditions.

How to fish here

Over 1,000 km long with a 64 km wide mouth, the Fly River is a major stronghold of Papuan bass (black bass), rated among the world's toughest fighters. Based on the mother ship MV K20, you push into remote jungle rivers, with barramundi in the mix too. The dry season (June-November), when the river is at its lowest, is the best chance to reach the innermost spots, and long charters combining five days on the river plus five days offshore at Portlock Reef are also offered.

Climate & what to wear source

The Fly River lies in the tropical climate of Papua New Guinea's southern lowlands near the equator, hot and humid year-round. The annual temperature range is small, around 30C during the day and 23-25C even at night. The rainy season (roughly December-April) brings heavy rain that swells and muddies the river, while the dry season (June-October) sees less rain and lower water levels. The table below shows monthly averages for Daru, a representative point at the Fly River estuary (representative values for the southern lowlands of PNG).
