The northeast trade-wind season, Dec–Apr, is relatively dry with stable sea conditions. Summer (May–Nov) sees heavy rain from the West Pacific monsoon, overlapping the typhoon season. GT can be targeted year-round, but the dry season, when you can pick calm days, is more comfortable.

A locally owned charter on Yap Island, Federated States of Micronesia, guiding untouched reef and open ocean. Inside the reef you fire poppers over the coral heads and burn them back to hook GT over 50 lb and bluefin trevally. Offshore, the targets are mahi-mahi, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, sailfish, and blue marlin. Much of the reef is privately held water requiring advance arrangement, and the marine protected areas (MPAs) are off-limits.

Hot and humid year-round, with 30–32°C by day and 23–25°C at night. Annual rainfall is about 3,000 mm (120 inches) with seasonality: summer is rainy, while the trade-wind period from winter to spring is relatively dry. Yap is more strongly affected by the West Pacific monsoon than eastern FSM.
In rough weather, switch to fly fishing in the mangroves, light tackle on the sand flats, or sheltered waters inside the reef. On days when the sea is off-limits, alternatives include visiting a stone money village and diving/snorkeling.
