Charters to the offshore reefs (Swains Reef, etc.) are generally good from spring to early summer (October-December), with coral trout, red emperor, spangled emperor, and the like biting well. There is a track record of plenty of redthroat emperor and coral trout being caught on winter (June-August) Swains expeditions. Expeditions are greatly affected by weather (wind and swell), so the key is choosing a period when sea conditions are stable.

A long-range liveaboard out of Gladstone Harbour running about 120 nautical miles offshore to the Swain Reefs of the southern Great Barrier Reef. Over 7-10 nights, the program mixes jigging for dogtooth, popping for GT, and light-lure casting for emperor and queenfish. Coral trout, red emperor, and Spanish mackerel are also prime targets on this open-ocean reef.
