Where it is & getting there

Getting there (from the nearest int'l airport) source

The gateway to Sanya, the tropical resort at the southern tip of Hainan Island, is Sanya Phoenix International Airport (SYX). It is about 14 km from the city center, and from the Sanya Phoenix high-speed railway station adjacent to the airport's north exit you can reach the city and various parts of the island. When flights are limited, going via Haikou Meilan International Airport (HAK) in the north of the island is also practical: from Meilan Station directly connected to the airport, it is about 1.5 to 2 hours to Sanya by high-speed rail. International arrival procedures and baggage claim take about an hour, so for departure, arriving 2 to 3 hours beforehand is recommended.

Target fish & season

GT/Sea bass

For inshore and offshore fishing targeting GT and tuna, the dry season (roughly November to April), when the sea is calm and visibility is good, is considered best. GT feed actively even in summer, so there are chances year-round, but during the typhoon season (July to October) departures tend to become unstable. Note that for the specific fishing conditions and seasons of local charters in Sanya and Hainan, checking with a local guide is recommended.

How to fish here

For GT The classic approach is popping/casting a diving pencil or popper across the surface; when fish are shy, jigging a heavy metal jig also works.
