Hakodate Airport (HKD) is the gateway. There are no direct flights from Osaka/Kansai, Fukuoka or Sapporo. Charters leave from Hakodate, Toi, Kikonai and Matsumae, so a rental car helps.

Target fish & season

Tuna

The best season for casting for bluefin tuna and pelagic fish is roughly summer to autumn. They start biting around July, with August-September being the peak when the encounter rate is highest (30-70 kg class). From October to January, large fish over 100 kg also enter the Tsugaru Strait, but unstable weather and extreme cold raise the difficulty, making cold-weather measures essential.

How to fish here

The headline game is casting for bluefin tuna in the Tsugaru Strait. The peak is the relatively settled weather of July to September, with August, when you meet the most surface-busting schools, the heart of the high season. Big fish can also be targeted in the Tsugaru Strait from October into the following January, and in some years 200 kg fish are caught on casting gear. Specialist charter boats like Steel and Sea Wolf run out of Hakodate's harbor.

Climate & what to wear source

Normal values 1991-2020 from the JMA Hakodate observatory. Summer (July-September), the peak season for tuna and pelagic fish, averages around 20C and is comfortable, but at sea the wind makes it feel colder, so an outer layer is essential. In winter the Tsugaru Strait is below freezing, with strong winds and extreme cold, requiring full cold-weather and waterproof gear. In spring and autumn, watch out for the chill in the mornings and evenings.
