The gateway is Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City. The Tri An Reservoir, the stage for snakehead (cá lóc / snakehead) fishing, is located in Dong Nai Province, about 65–80 km northeast of the city center. The best time for freshwater lure fishing such as snakehead (giant snakehead) is the dry season (around December–April), when there is little rain and water conditions are stable. Early spring (March–May) is also suitable for targeting freshwater snakehead, with high fish activity. Within a day, 6–10 a.m. and 3–7 p.m. are considered the active feeding periods.

The main grounds are reservoirs near Ho Chi Minh City: Tri An Lake in Dong Nai Province and Dau Tieng Lake in Tay Ninh Province.
