Target fish & season

Mahseer/carp/goldenMahseer/goonch

There are two best seasons for golden mahseer fishing. Post-monsoon (autumn), roughly late September to November (October in particular, just after the rainy season, offers large fish and good condition), and pre-monsoon (spring), March to early June (warming water temperatures boost activity; fly fishing is especially good in March-April). The rainy season (July-September) is unsuitable due to swollen, murky rivers, and winter sees reduced activity from low water temperatures. The mahseer is an IUCN endangered species, so catch and release is the rule.

How to fish here

The golden mahseer of the Himalayan foothill streams peak during the spawning runs of April-May and October-November. The two best seasons are the pre-monsoon March to early June and the clear water of September to November after the rains. Premier fields include the Ramganga River running through Jim Corbett National Park, and Pancheshwar where the Saryu and Mahakali rivers meet.
