Yellowtail amberjack/Pelagics
There are two best seasons for shore casting and jigging for amberjack, yellowtail and other pelagic fish. The peak is autumn to winter, October to January, when you can enjoy numbers of amberjack, young yellowtail and yellowtail. In spring, March to April, before spawning, you can target the large fish known as 'dekamasa'. In winter, beware of rough seas and dropping water temperatures caused by the northwesterly seasonal winds.

Known as a mecca for yellowtail amberjack floating in the Genkai Sea, where you target big pelagics by casting, jigging, and tairaba. The prime seasons are spring (Mar-Apr) as the run builds and autumn into winter (Oct-Jan), with the amberjack really kicking off from October on. The same waters also offer big fish like red seabream, tuna, and grouper, and many charter boats are run by working fishermen.

Iki is relatively mild thanks to the Tsushima Current, but in winter the northwesterly seasonal winds are strong. This overlaps with the peak season for amberjack and yellowtail, yet the sea is prone to rough conditions, so watch out for cancellations and suspended departures. The figures below are the monthly temperatures (°C) for Fukuoka, the nearest representative point, based on the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) 1991-2020 normals, as a guide for the Genkai Sea and around Iki.
