Where it is & getting there

Getting there (from the nearest int'l airport) source

The gateway is Kaimana Airport (KNG / Utarom Airport). Wings Air operates daily domestic flights from Sorong (SOQ), the hub of Indonesia's West Papua, taking about 1 hour 20 minutes. Most travel routes go Jakarta (CGK) → Sorong → Kaimana with a connection. To reach Triton Bay, after arriving at Kaimana, transfer by boat from the port. For diving, a liveaboard (overnight on board) is common.

Target fish & season

★Papuan bass(black bass)/GT/Barramundi(Triton Bay)

The best season is roughly October to April. During the southeast monsoon from May to September, sea conditions become rough and many boat operators stop running in Triton Bay and move to Komodo and the Banda Sea. From October to April the swells subside, visibility is good, and conditions are favorable for diving and fishing. Whale sharks (around the bagan) are best targeted during the new moon. Because there are few operating runs, booking 6–12 months in advance is recommended.

How to fish here

The home of the Papuan bass (Kaimana black bass), a freshwater predator with some of the fiercest power anywhere. Fly into Kaimana and push into the jungle rivers by mothership, working sunken timber, rock edges, and dropoffs. Draw surface explosions with deep-diving cranks and big topwaters; barramundi, GT, and snapper also mix in. The dry season of May-Oct, when water levels drop and fish concentrate, is prime.
