Target fish & season

Mahseer/carp/Mountain stream

The best season for freshwater/river fishing (toman/Kelah = Malayan mahseer, Tor tambroides) is Feb-Sep, when rain is relatively low and water levels are stable (especially the drier period of Feb-Apr). It is safest to avoid Oct-Jan, when the northeast monsoon brings strong flooding and turbidity. Because Kelah (mahseer) migrate upstream to the headwaters in the dry season and spawn around July, the clear streams and rocky-bottomed upper reaches are good points. The Nenggiri River has a Kelah sanctuary where large individuals (a record up to 27 kg) live.
