From the airport to the Pengkalan Gawi jetty, the lake's main hub, it is about 45 minutes to 1 hour by car (about 65 km), and all lake cruises and houseboats depart from this jetty. Target fish & season

Snakehead (toman)/Mahseer/carp(Kelah)/Barramundi

The best fishing season is the year-end rainy (monsoon) period, roughly October to March. November in particular, the early part of the monsoon, is considered prime. Toman (snakehead / giant snakehead) can be targeted with frog lures and poppers, and fish numbers grow denser during this rainy season. Kelah (Malaysian mahseer / a carp family fish) should not be caught during its spawning season, so the non-spawning season in the clear streams flowing into the lake is the target. Early morning (6 to 9) and evening (17 to 19) are the prime times.

How to fish here

One of Southeast Asia's largest man-made lakes, dotted with over 340 islands. The draws are casting for toman and fly fishing for kelah (mahseer). Toman respond to frogs and surface poppers, with the bite from 6-9am and 5-7pm. Serious fishing is the rainy season, Oct-Feb, but the kelah sanctuary is closed during the Dec-Feb spawning period.
