From the airport, Khao Lak is about 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes north by car (about 82 km). From overseas, including Japan, the usual routes are to transfer to a domestic flight to HKT via Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi/Don Mueang), or to fly direct into HKT. From the airport, head to Khao Lak by private taxi/transfer, shared minivan, or public bus.

GT/Billfish/Tuna/Wahoo
Fishing off Khao Lak and around the Similan Islands runs mainly in the dry-season months of November to April, peaking from December to March when the sea is calm. GT (giant trevally) jigging and popping target the FADs (fish aggregating devices) of the Similan Islands roughly from October to May, with activity said to run from March to November. Sailfish are best from November to April, with the high season from October to March. Tuna (yellowfin etc.) are good from June to November. Pelagics (migratory fish), including wahoo and dogtooth tuna, are most concentrated from December to March.

Khao Lak is the launch point for Similan and Surin island expeditions in the Andaman Sea. Best is the northeast-monsoon Andaman season of Nov-Apr, while during the southwest monsoon of Jun-Oct many liveaboards shut down. Popping and jigging the FADs off the Similans runs Oct-May, targeting GT, wahoo, mahimahi, and sailfish.

Khao Lak has a hot and humid tropical climate year-round. The best season is the dry season from November to April (the sea is especially calm from December to March). The rainy season is May to October (rainfall peaks around September). The Similan Islands and Surin Islands national parks usually open only from October to April (roughly November to April) and close during the rainy season, so diving and fishing are centered on the dry season.
