Kuala Penyu is a coastal town at the southwestern tip of Sabah, about 2-3 hours' drive southwest from Kota Kinabalu (BKI International Airport). It serves as a base for the estuary, nearshore waters (Tempurung) and the Klias wetlands; public transport is scarce, so a rental car or chartered car is realistic.

Sabah's west coast is protected by the island of Borneo and the northeast monsoon (November-March) has less impact than on the east coast, but roughly March-September, when the sea is relatively calm and rainfall is low (especially the driest period of February-March and the drier-season times), is easier for nearshore and estuary fishing. Kuala Penyu is an estuary town in southwestern Sabah (in Malay, Kuala means river mouth). In the mangrove-lined brackish zone, mangrove jack lurking against fallen timber and roots are the prime target. They're ambush fish that hold on structure, so you work carefully from the river mouth down through the lower tidal creeks. Sabah holds vast mangroves, an area where you can enjoy both the brackish and the saltwater sides.
