Target fish & season

Inshore/spearfishing

The best fishing season is the dry season from around May to October (especially July to November, when the sea is calm with steady flat conditions and visibility improves). Kupang and West Timor lie within the Coral Triangle, making the waters around Rote Island, the Savu Sea, and Sumba a fine field for GT (giant trevally on poppers), tuna (jigging), and bottom fish such as snapper and grouper. During the rainy season (December to March), the risk of rain, swells, and tropical depressions rises, and conditions for going out tend to worsen.

How to fish here

Kupang, the capital of West Timor, is NTT's largest port town, home to Tenau fishing harbour. Dedicated game-fishing boats are scarce, so the norm is to charter a local fisherman's boat, and they bring up marlin and sailfish on handlines. The Timor-Rote-Sumba region is emerging as a game-fish hub for eastern Indonesia, and spearfishing for grouper, GT and snapper on the reefs is also popular.
