Target fish & season

GT/Billfish/Tuna/Snapper

The best fishing season is around October-January, after the southwest monsoon ends. The sea calms down, and GT (giant trevally) is best from October to January, especially around the spring tides (full and new moon). During the dry season in November-February, near-shore and bottom species (snappers) can also be targeted reliably. Conversely, the southwest monsoon period of June-September brings heavy rain and rough weather that makes it hard to set out, and in Kerala a ban on trawl (mechanized boat) fishing is enforced every year from early June to the end of July (in 2025, a 52-day period from June 9 to July 31) to protect fish breeding, so it is a period to avoid.

How to fish here

For GT Billfish Tuna Snapper The classic approach is popping/casting a diving pencil or popper across the surface; when fish are shy, jigging a heavy metal jig also works.
