Target fish & season

Jigging/GT/Offshore

The best season for fishing in Miri (jigging, GT popping, offshore) is roughly March to October. Good weather means few trip cancellations and a wide variety of target fish. During the northeast monsoon (November to February), sea conditions tend to be rough and departures are unstable. Target fish include GT, kingfish, queenfish and red grouper (shallow waters 20-60m), as well as yellowfin tuna, amberjack, bigeye trevally/giant trevally types, giant grouper, barracuda and wahoo (deep waters 80-450m, toward the Brunei border). As a tackle guide, jigging uses PE4 or higher (40lb leader, 300m or more of line) and popping uses PE6 or higher.

How to fish here

Off Miri the best season is Mar-Oct, the dry season, when departures are reliable. Run several hours by big boat out to the offshore banks such as the Batu Mat and Suai reefs near the Brunei border to build a jigging and bottom-fishing program. GT, yellowfin, and big grouper are the main targets, with tackle around PE 4-plus and 200-400 g jigs.
