GT/Wahoo/Spanish mackerel
GT (giant trevally) fishing can be enjoyed almost year-round, as fish gather in the shallows, drop-offs, and strong currents of the Hinako Islands, where you can target GT, narrow-barred Spanish mackerel, wahoo, tuna, and mahi-mahi. The most stable period for access and sea conditions is the dry period of roughly April-October, which is also the best surf season when good ground swell enters the Indian Ocean. February-March, when the sea is calm, also makes boat travel easy. As a world-class surf spot, the best season is likewise April-October (resorts may close during the low season).

Around Asu Island, part of the Hinako Islands off the west coast of Nias in North Sumatra. Facing the Indian Ocean, the fast current on the Asu side draws game fish in. Beyond popping for GT, wahoo, Spanish mackerel, mahimahi, and yellowfin migrate through, with ruby snapper and big grouper in the depths. Access is mainly by surf-charter boats out of Lagundri Bay, with a strong wilderness feel and little development.

Nias Island has a hot and humid tropical climate with no clearly defined dry season, and it rains throughout the year. Daytime highs are 27-31°C and nighttime lows are 22-24°C, with little annual variation in temperature. The sea is relatively calm with less rain around February-March, and June is also relatively dry. October-November is the rainiest. Because it is summer year-round, light clothing (T-shirt and shorts) is fine all year, but sun and squall protection is needed.
