For saltwater fishing (river mouth and nearshore), the cooler period of the early dry season into spring, roughly October to March, when the heavy northeast monsoon rains have eased, is considered the best time. Across Thailand as a whole, the dry season (roughly October to May) is the best season. Meanwhile, during the monsoon downpour period of July to September it becomes hard to put out, though bites can become active right after rain. The waters off Pattani are stormy and rainy during the peak of the northeast monsoon from November to January, making fishing trips difficult.

In Thailand's deep south, the main grounds are the gulf-side estuaries and shore. Around Saiburi, traditional-boat night squid fishing is popular, and Khae Khae beach in Panare district hosts a squid-fishing and camping festival in May. Estuaries where the tide concentrates bait are prime barramundi water, worked with shore jigging and squid jigs.
