Target fish & season

Snakehead (toman)/Snakehead casting

Freshwater and river fishing for toman (snakeheads) and the like is easiest in the dry season (roughly June to August), when there is relatively little rain and the water level is stable with little turbidity. On the other hand, Indonesian studies suggest that snakeheads grow more actively during the rainy season (October to March), and their activity can rise during high-water periods. Overall, the dry season, with stable weather and easier topwater feeding to target, is the guideline for the best season. However, since haze can occur in some years around June to September, pay attention to air conditions.

How to fish here

The main grounds are the inland rivers, lakes and swamps (rawa) of Riau and the irrigation canals of palm estates. The headline snakeheads are gabus (Channa striata) and toman (Channa micropeltes), and the standard is casting surface frogs and baitfish-style lures. The Siak River running through the city yields gabus and toman plus baung and patin. As aggressive predators, their trademark is the surface explosion.

Climate & what to wear source

Pekanbaru has a tropical rainforest climate right on the equator (Koppen Af). It is hot and humid year-round, with daytime highs of 30-33C and nighttime lows of 22-24C, remaining almost constant. Rain is plentiful throughout the year but relatively light from June to August, with the rainy season peaking around November. For clothing, lightweight summer wear plus protection against sun and squalls is the basic rule year-round.
