Where it is & getting there

Getting there (from the nearest int'l airport) source

The gateway to the Penghu Islands is Penghu (Magong) Airport [MZG]. Many domestic flights serve it from Songshan (Taipei), Taichung, Tainan, Chiayi and Kaohsiung on Taiwan's main island, arriving in as little as 30 to 60 minutes. Boats run year-round from Kaohsiung and mainly in summer from Chiayi (Budai Port), but the ports are far from the airport and stations, so mind your connections. From Japan, the common route is to arrive at Kaohsiung International Airport or transit via Taipei to Songshan Airport, then connect to MZG.

Target fish & season

Amberjack/Squid/Jigging

The best time to fish is April to September (spring to early autumn), when winds are weak and the sea is calm. In particular, nighttime squid (xiaojuan / coastal squid) fishing is in season from May to September, peaking from June to September. Recreational fishing that draws in squid with fish-luring lights from boats is a Penghu specialty. April to May has southerly winds, not too hot and comfortable, and September is also worth targeting with its lingering heat. July to August is the peak, but there is a risk of approaching typhoons, so mind the decision to sail. October to the following March is the off-season, with fierce northeast monsoons roughing up the sea and greatly limiting sea trips and water activities.

How to fish here

Penghu has a thriving nearshore boat fishery split into two by season. Summer (May-September, peaking June-August) features nighttime lamp fishing for swordtip squid, centered on easy 2-4 hour night tours. Winter means metal jigging at 20-60 m for pelagics like amberjack (red amberjack). Riding 3-16 oz jigs on the current is the standard presentation.

Details (access, climate, lodging & more)

Climate & what to wear source

Penghu has a subtropical (Cwa) climate, with hot and humid summers and dry, mostly sunny winters. Its biggest feature is the very strong northeast monsoon (Dongbei Jifeng) in winter. From October to the following January, wind speeds of 6 m/s or more become the norm, and during winter (October to March) the frequency of exceeding 10 m/s is about 56%. It is nicknamed the "Island of Wind," and winter limits sea trips and water activities. Summer (April to September) has weak winds and is comfortable, but watch for typhoons in July and August.
