Snakehead (toman)
The best season for toman (giant snakehead/Channa micropeltes) fishing is the dry season, December to March. Rain settles and water levels stabilize in this period, making catches easier. Within a day, early morning and from evening to dusk are prime times. On overcast or heavy-rain days, fishing can be good all day long. Note that some areas on the east coast and inland see heavier northeast monsoon rain from November to February, so checking local weather before departure is recommended.

In Peninsular Malaysia, toman (giant snakehead) ambush prey from the cover of shoreline aquatic plants and sunken structure. The classic tactic is fry-ball fishing: find a school of fry (a fry ball) and coax out the parent fish guarding it with topwater poppers, frogs or pencils.
