There are no direct flights from Japan; you fly to SOQ via Jakarta (CGK) or Makassar (UPG). From Sorong, transfer at the port to an express ferry (express boat) bound for Waisai. The trip from Sorong Airport to the port takes about 10 to 20 minutes by taxi. The ferry runs roughly twice a day (around 9:00/14:00) and takes about 2 hours. After arriving at Waisai, you proceed to your final destination by each lodge's speedboat (about 15 minutes to 2 hours). Most GT, dogtooth, and jigging charters are liveaboard (overnight on the boat), boarding from Sorong or Waisai.

Fishing at Raja Ampat / Sorong is viable year-round, but the best season is the dry season (October–April) when the seas calm down. In particular, GT (giant trevally) topwater popping is best in this period, and since surface fishing in lagoons and channels is heavily affected by weather and sea conditions, the calm dry season suits it well. Dogtooth tuna is mainly targeted by deep jigging in passes (channels) with good current flow; fish of 20–40 kg+ are possible, and deep fishing remains relatively good even from May onward when the southeast monsoon strengthens (including yellowfin and the like). In July–August, strong southerly winds make the seas rough, so the days unsuitable for topwater fishing increase. Overall, GT topwater targeting suits the dry season (October–April), while dogtooth jigging is promising year-round, with catches expected in deep water even during the rough-weather season.

An expedition-style fishery run out of Sorong as the gateway, touring the islands of Raja Ampat by mothership or speedboat. Oct-Apr is the main event: in the remote lagoons GT smash topwaters even over coral in just 1.5 m of water, while in the fast channels 20-40 kg dogtooth are taken on deep jigs. A typical program is 5-8 spots a day over 7-10 days. Fly to Sorong, then 2-4 hours by boat.

Being right on the equator, temperatures are stable year-round, with daytime highs of about 31°C, nighttime lows of about 25°C, and sea temperatures of about 28–29°C. Humidity averages over 80%, so it feels somewhat muggy. The dry season (northwest monsoon) is roughly October to April, when sea conditions calm down, with the best season being mid-October to mid-December. The rainy season (southeast monsoon) is May to September; June–July is the rainiest, and July–August brings stronger southerly winds and rougher seas. December–January is also called a 'second rainy season' as rainfall increases despite being the dry season.
