Fly fishing for both rainbow and brown trout on Lake Rotorua and its feeder rivers (such as the Ngongotaha). The lake is open year-round; rainbows average around 1.5 kg and browns around 2.5 kg, and trophies over 10 lb (about 4.5 kg) are not uncommon. Autumn into early winter (April-May), when the spawning run builds, is a prime window for big fish moving up from the lake, and in summer heli access to backcountry streams is popular too.
Mild inland climate. In summer (Feb) daytime is 24°C and night 14°C; in winter (Jul) daytime is around 13°C and night 5°C. A geothermal-area environment.

If strong winds make the lake rough, switch to inflowing rivers or another lake (choice of 17–18 lakes). During high water, switch to lake fishing.
