The gateway is Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI). All three rivers lie in the interior, accessed overland from KK city by rental car or tour transfer. Kiulu is a stream in the Tamparuli direction, known for beginner-friendly Grade I–II rafting. Tambunan and Ranau lie on the highland side beyond the Crocker Range, somewhat cooler thanks to the higher elevation.

The best season for freshwater and river fishing is the relatively dry period with little flooding or murk. For fly fishing for Sabah's mahseer (locally kelah/pelian), January–May and August–October are considered prime, when fishable rivers are more readily available. The general fishing window is also said to favor the drier months of March–October. By contrast, November–February sees more rain and is prone to flooding. However, Sabah has no clear-cut dry season and the weather is increasingly hard to predict year to year, so the basic rule is to avoid the extreme wet periods that bring flooding. Many river villages manage their resources under the Tagal system, so fishing must follow the permitted zones and rules.

Sabah's interior has an equatorial tropical climate with little temperature change through the year. The figures below are representative of Ranau (around 500 m elevation), a guide for the interior lowlands and the KK area. Tambunan (around 750 m) and the Kundasang highlands (averaging about 19–20°C) grow cooler with elevation, and mornings and evenings can be chilly, so a layer to throw on is reassuring. Short sleeves are enough during the day, but rain gear for squalls is essential year-round.
