The standard route is to take a ferry/fast boat from Ulee Lheue port in Banda Aceh on the mainland to Balohan port in Sabang. From BTJ Airport (Sultan Iskandar Muda Airport) to Ulee Lheue port is about 20-30 minutes by road. From Balohan port to the main beaches (Iboih / Gapang / Sumur Tiga) is about 45 minutes to 1 hour by car.

The area around Pulau Weh has two windy seasons, the northeast monsoon and the west monsoon, with the west monsoon peaking from June to September. During this time the wind is strong and the waves are high, making offshore fishing difficult, while migratory fish including large tuna such as yellowfin and bigeye come through. According to fishing operators, the seasonal transition from east to west is considered the prime time, when migratory fish (yellowfin, bigeye, etc.) gather in large numbers. For GT and popping, good spots such as Payakeuneukai work well, with steep drop-offs and offshore reefs or areas around small islands being ideal. The rainy season is roughly September to February (peaking from late December to January). Check with operators for specific fishing feasibility and the best timing.

An open-ocean fishery off Pulau Weh, facing the Andaman Sea at Indonesia's northernmost tip in Aceh. The heart of it is Rondo Island, about 15 miles from Sabang town, where a reef at 51 m drops off into open ocean and holds big pelagics. Trolling, jigging, and popping all produce here, with a wide catch spanning GT, dogtooth tuna, yellowfin, ruby snapper, Spanish mackerel, and marlin.

Close to the equator, it is hot and humid year-round. There is no clear dry season; influenced by the northeast monsoon and tropical depressions, October to January is the rainier period. Annual rainfall is about 1800mm and average humidity is about 85%. Annual temperature variation is small, with the coolest month, December, averaging 25.5C and the hottest, June, averaging 27.2C.
