Sibu is a river-port city in central Sarawak, on the Rajang River (Malaysia's longest river). The gateway is Sibu Airport (SBW, about 23 km southeast of the city center). Access is mainly by air from Kuala Lumpur (KUL), Kuching (KCH), and Miri (MYY); KUL flights are operated nonstop by AirAsia/Batik Air/Firefly/Malaysia Airlines. Besides flying, you can also reach Sibu by express boat from the Kuching ferry terminal via Sarikei and Tanjung Manis. Snakehead (toman)
The best season for targeting toman (giant snakehead / freshwater) is roughly December to March. Early morning and evening offer catches year-round. The Rajang River (Malaysia's longest) system, especially the area around the upstream Bakun Dam, holds dense fish and offers toman and Malaysian mahseer. It is effective to cast topwater lures like poppers or frogs accurately near bankside vegetation and fallen trees. When floods submerge the forest, toman scatter into the interior and become hard to find, so periods when the water level has settled are the prime time.

Sitting on the middle reaches of the Rajang, Sarawak's largest river, Sibu is a base for lure fishing its tributaries and channels for toman (giant snakehead). The standard game has a local guide aboard a roughly 6 m boat while you pitch surface poppers and frogs into the shoreline brush. Fish generally run 1.5-9 kg, with the best bite at dawn and dusk. Sibu has a tropical rainforest climate, hot and humid year-round (humidity 80-90%). Seasonal temperature variation is very small (annual range about 1.3°C), with daytime highs of 31-33°C and nighttime lows of 23-24°C staying nearly constant.
