Where it is & getting there

Getting there (from the nearest int'l airport) source

The gateway to Simeulue Island (off Aceh Province, Indian Ocean) is Lasikin Airport (IATA: LKI) near Sinabang in the southeastern part of the island. Domestic flights from Medan (Kualanamu/KNO) and Banda Aceh (BTJ) are the main routes, and there are also ferry routes from Meulaboh and Singkil on the mainland side. Both flights and ferries are prone to weather-related changes, so confirm in advance.

Target fish & season

GT/Popping

The best season for surfing is April-October, especially May-August when large, powerful swells from the Indian Ocean make waves suited to experts. April, September, and October have calmer waves suited to intermediate surfers. For fishing (GT and inshore), this drier period (roughly April-October) when swells and weather are stable and it is easier to head out to sea is the prime time, while the rainy peak of October-November tends to worsen departure conditions.

How to fish here

A GT-popping mecca set in the Indian Ocean off Aceh. Around the surrounding islands such as Mincau and Lasia, target GT, yellowfin, and big grouper on poppers and jigs. Spanish mackerel, wahoo, and sailfish also join in. The calm dry season (roughly late Apr-Oct) is the easiest time to plan around.
