Target fish & season

Barramundi/Squid/Hairtail/freshwater(Hat Yai)

The best fishing season overlaps with the dry season, November-March; around Songkhla, November-January is considered prime. Across the Gulf of Thailand, the dry season of October-March brings more stable sea conditions and suits inshore and bottom fish (grouper, snapper, etc.) and trolling for Spanish mackerel. When the rainy season sets in fully, sailings tend to become unstable.

How to fish here

The area around Songkhla Lake, Thailand's largest natural lake, headlined by barramundi (kaphong). The lake is a brackish lagoon where inland fresh water mixes with seawater from the bay, notable for its three zones of differing salinity. Locally the fish is prized enough that "Songkhla barramundi" holds GI (geographical indication) certification. Nearshore you can also target squid and cutlassfish, with good access from Hat Yai International Airport.
