Deep-sea trolling for large fish such as sailfish and yellowfin tuna is best from Nov-Apr (the second inter-monsoon to the first inter-monsoon), when the sea is calm. Off Mirissa the shelf drops away steeply, reaching depths of 500-1000 m in a short time, making it ideal for big game. Yellowfin in the 30-60 kg class can be caught. Sailfish can be targeted off the south coast from Nov-Apr.

Mirissa on Sri Lanka's southwest coast is a premier big-game ground where, just off the harbour, the continental shelf drops to 500-1000m. A short run puts you on the billfish grounds for blue, black and striped marlin, sailfish, yellowfin and wahoo. The best season is the calm months of Nov-Apr. Established charters cluster along the Colombo-to-Mirissa stretch.
