The usual gateway is via Lombok, with two main routes: a direct ferry from Lombok Airport (LOP), or a domestic flight to Sumbawa Besar Airport (SWQ) followed by an overland trip south. From Bali (DPS) it takes a full day by road plus ferry.

GT/Pelagic
The best time for GT (giant trevally) and dogtooth tuna is generally the dry season when the sea is calm, around April to June and September to November. The southern Sumbawa coast is said to be especially calm in May and June, ideal for multi-day GT expeditions. Eastern to southern Lombok and southern Sumbawa are good fields for trolling, jigging and popping. Because GT fishing has its characteristic streaks, it is best to check conditions with a local charter.

The Maluk and Sekongkang area of West Sumbawa is a rare place where land-based GT popping actually works. Combined with popping and trolling from the boat, target GT and pelagics. The calm windows of May-Jun and Sep are prime for GT and dogtooth, while other times tend to get swelly. The varied terrain offers plenty of spot options.

A tropical savanna climate, hot year-round. The dry season runs roughly April to November (June to September has the least rain), and the rainy season is December to March, peaking in January and February. September and October are the hottest, reaching around 34°C. The calm-sea dry season is the prime time for sightseeing, fishing and surfing.
