For river and freshwater fishing, aim for the dry season when water levels are stable and the water is clear. In the North Sumatra/Medan area, roughly February to July (especially February and June-July) has little rainfall, lowering the risk of high water and turbidity. August to December (peaking in October) is rainy and prone to high water and turbidity. Mahseer (Tor species) are said to spawn early in the rainy season and prefer clear, fast upstream flows, so the stable water levels and clarity of the dry season are advantageous for fishing. The stage is North Sumatra's clear rivers such as the Asahan and Wampu. The target is the mahseer known as ikan jurung (Neolissochilus sumatranus), which the Batak people call ikan Batak, a prized fish used in ceremonies.
