Tawau in Sabah, Borneo is a mecca for Papuan bass (locally tembarin), fished in the mangrove rivers of the border island Pulau Sebatik. You cast lures through the tangled brackish-to-freshwater channels and brace for the 1-6kg fish's explosive run. It's a heavy game where fish bolt for cover and broken rods are no surprise. Access is easiest in the calm dry season (May-Sep).
