Getting there (from the nearest int'l airport) source

Tasik Temenggor/Banding (Tasik Temenggor) is a man-made dam lake in the Hulu Perak District of Perak, the second largest in Peninsular Malaysia after Lake Kenyir. The gateways are by car from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) or Penang; the East-West Highway (Route 4, between Gerik and Jeli) crosses the lake and passes through the man-made island of Pulau Banding. Boats depart from the jetty at Banding.

Target fish & season

Snakehead (toman)/Mahseer/carp(Royal Belum)

Freshwater fishing in Temenggor/Royal Belum is possible year-round (entry permits and fishing permits are issued all year). Sebarau (Malaysian jungle perch) is said to be best during the monsoon period of October to December, and December in particular is pleasant with early mornings of about 20 C. In the rainy season, rain prompts the spawning behavior of large snakeheads (toman), and as Sebarau migrate upstream to breed, activity tends to rise. However, if the water level is too high the forest becomes flooded and toman scatter in search of food, making them harder to find. Because water levels fluctuate with dam releases and an unstable monsoon, an absolute best month is not guaranteed, so the advice of a local guide is valuable.

How to fish here

A lake within Royal Belum, created by Temengor Dam (completed 1974), Peninsular Malaysia's second-largest man-made lake. Based on houseboats, cast lures for toman and sebarau (hampala), with the area known for some of the world's largest, most aggressive toman. The surrounding rivers also hold kelah (Malayan mahseer). Fishable year-round, but the Oct-Jan monsoon period is prime.
