Where it is & getting there

Getting there (from the nearest int'l airport) source

The gateway to the Tiwi Islands (Bathurst Island and Melville Island in the NT) is Darwin (DRW). By light aircraft it takes as little as 20-30 minutes; the ferry to Wurrumiyanga on Bathurst Island takes about 2.5 hours. As the entire area is Aboriginal-owned land, an entry permit is required (arranged by the operator when joining a tour. Only the cultural precinct of Wurrumiyanga requires no permit for ferry passengers).

Target fish & season

GT/Barramundi/Snapper/Spanish mackerel/Grouper

For barramundi, the run-off (March-May) and the build-up (October-December) are considered the best seasons, when catches are easiest in estuaries and tidal rivers. The Dry season (May-September) also offers clear water and stable, favorable conditions; in addition to barramundi you can target GT (giant trevally) and golden trevally by hitting blue water and bait balls. GT and estuary/blue-water fishing center on the Dry season when the weather is stable. The Wet season (November-April) brings high temperatures and heavy rain, making fishing conditions difficult.

How to fish here

For GT Barramundi Snapper Spanish mackerel The classic approach is popping/casting a diving pencil or popper across the surface; when fish are shy, jigging a heavy metal jig also works.
