Tuaran lies about 34 km north of Kota Kinabalu (KK), the capital of Sabah, along the trunk road connecting KK with northern Sabah. From the airport or central KK it is about a 45-minute to 1-hour drive. From there it is a further few to about ten-odd minutes to the Mengkabong estuary or Dalit Beach area. Public transport is limited, so a rental car or taxi/ride-hailing is realistic.

On Sabah's west coast (near KK), the drier period when the sea is calm and the weather stays stable (roughly March to September, especially April to July) is best for sea fishing and boating. By contrast, the northeast monsoon period of November to February brings more rain and waves, and the sea is prone to roughening. Estuarine and brackish areas such as the Mengkabong estuary can be targeted year-round, but watch for turbidity and current during high-water periods.

Tuaran is an estuary and mangrove belt on Sabah's west coast, north of Kota Kinabalu. Brackish zones like the Mengkabong River spread out, and you ambush mangrove jack (kerapu) holding on roots and fallen timber. Targeting grouper around the offshore platforms and boat charters are popular too. The setting is a calm inlet with views of Mount Kinabalu, allowing both estuary and offshore fishing.

The Kota Kinabalu / Sabah west-coast region has a tropical climate, hot and humid year-round with little seasonal variation in temperature (representative values are KK's 1991-2020 climate normals). Rainfall tends to increase from around November to February under the influence of the northeast monsoon. During the day wear light, breathable clothing, bring rain gear for sudden squalls, and take sun protection (hat, sunscreen) against the strong sunshine.
