The harbor sits midway between Kona airport and the town of Kailua-Kona, the Big Island's gateway, which also has direct flights from the US mainland (West Coast) and Japan. All charters depart from Honokohau Harbor. The main grounds are calm waters just 10-15 min offshore, easy for everyone from beginners to serious anglers. Many top captains are based at this harbor.

Blue marlin can be caught year-round here - rare worldwide - and this is the only sea where fish over 1,000 lb have been recorded in every month. The peak is Jun-Sep, but the largest marlin also come in Mar-May. Ahi run Jun-Aug, ono May-Sep, and mahi-mahi are best winter-April.

Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii is one of the world's great trolling grounds, with blue marlin available year-round. Leave Honokohau Harbor and prime water over 1800m deep sits just 3 miles out, so you can put lines out right after departure. The peak is Jun-Sep, when big blue marlin and schools of yellowfin (ahi) thicken up. Mahi-mahi, ono (wahoo), striped marlin and spearfish also mix in.

Kona is on the Big Island's leeward side, with a dry climate and little rain. Temperatures are steady at 21-27C year-round, and annual rainfall is about 27 inches. July and September are a bit wetter, but rain is mainly a brief afternoon-to-evening affair. Summer (especially August) has the calmest seas of the year.
Since the main grounds are offshore, swell has little effect, but in rough weather trips are adjusted to calmer waters near the harbor or the morning calm. On stormy days it's easy to switch to snorkeling, a coffee-farm visit, or sightseeing on Mauna Kea.
