QantasLink (a subsidiary carrier) and others operate direct flights from Cairns (CNS), taking about 1 hour 25 minutes. Overland access is mainly via unsealed roads heading north through the Cape York Peninsula from Cairns, and driving is only practical in the dry season.

GT/Spanish mackerel/Tuna
Barramundi peak with the post-wet-season runoff (March to June, especially April to May), when active fish gather where flooded rivers and wetlands drain in. The September to early December buildup is also a good chance. The cooler June to August period, when estuaries are calm, also sees active barramundi. Note that Weipa's barramundi season closes on October 7 each year. Trevally such as GT (giant trevally) and inshore migratory fish are best targeted in the dry season (roughly May to October) when sea conditions are stable.

Weipa, on the west coast of Cape York, is calmer than the east coast and Queensland's premier barramundi mecca. In Albatross Bay, on the flats, and up the rivers, target barramundi, GT, queenfish, golden trevally, and Spanish mackerel on fly, lure, and live bait. The dry season of Apr-Nov is the main event, with early April to early June the year's best for weather and bite. The Dec-Mar wet season is not suited to it.

A tropical monsoon climate with clearly defined dry and wet seasons. The dry season is roughly May to October (little rain, with July the driest and sunniest), and the wet season is November to April (concentrated December to March, with annual rainfall over 2 m). The annual average temperature is about 27 degrees C.
