How to fish here

Based in Whakatane in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty, this charter runs out to the active volcanic island of White Island. The 10 m catamaran carries live-bait tanks and outriggers to target the famed big kingfish and hapuka, plus bluefin and yellowfin tuna and marlin. Southern bluefin tuna run from late June to early August, producing fish in the 40-130 kg class.

Climate & what to wear

The mild maritime climate of the Bay of Plenty. Summers are warm with plenty of sunshine, and winters are mild. Monthly high/low temperature data for Whakatane could not be confirmed, so figures are omitted.

If the sea gets rough source

Because it involves about 49 km of open-ocean voyaging to the offshore active-volcano island, trips are cancelled in strong winds and swell. In bad weather, the schedule is adjusted.
