Three Days for 34.8 kg — Goto, a Baitcaster-Only Trip

2026-08-08 · fishingmap.fun

March 23 to 25, 2024, Goto (Fukue Island). Over 3 days run baitcaster-only: 34.80 kg, 26 kg, 18 kg, 15 kg, 13 kg. Five fish over 10 kg came up. The 34.80 kg is my weight record for hiramasa (yellowtail amberjack).

Let me say this up front. This is not one day's catch. It is the total for the 3 days. While sorting out my own records, I noticed that these 5 fish had been entered in the ledger as the number of fish in a single day. It was an innocent error, but being vague about the number of days is the worst thing you can do when talking about fishing, so I have corrected it and written it up here.

Each rod had its own fish

What made this trip clean was that each of the 3 rods took a different fish.

RodFishLure

Fishman BC4 8.3XXXH26 kgHayabusa 120
Fishman BRIST HYDRO 8.518 kgBocchu Hiramasa 190

All 3 reels were Calcutta Conquest 401. That is deliberate. In my case, with a spinning reel whose line retrieve per crank is 134 cm the jerk swings too wide and missed jerks increase. The 101 cm of the 401 fits the length of my arm — I wrote about this in the article on line retrieve per crank.

The lures that got hits were only two: Hayabusa 120 and Bocchu Hiramasa 190 Clear. The Hayabusa puts the tease and the eat into a single jerk automatically, so errors are less likely even in wind and chop. Goto in March gets rough.

Holed up in Fukue by rough seas

It was not a smooth trip. Rough seas left me stranded in Fukue. With Goto the journey itself is the hard part, and on the trip at the end of that year, delays, cancellations, and even trouble checking the rods in all piled up together.

Even so, Goto is where the records come from. As long as I can get out on the water, something good happens.

Tide — the core was the final day only

Laid out on the Korean Multtae (물때), the 3 days look like this.

DayLunarmulttaeDistance from Sari (사리)
3/23145물2 days
3/24156물1 day
3/25167물0 days

Three days climbing toward Sari, and the core was entered only on the final day. And the 34.80 kg came on that final day too, 3/25, at 07:16 in the morning. In the terms of this site's table it is the "window that starts at 5물 (5, 6, 7물)" — entering from the leading shoulder and finishing at the core, the combination that the recommended tide cycles page describes as "insurance for the season when the weather cannot be read."

This shape repeats in my records. The Goto trip from 11/30 to 12/2 the same year also had 12/1 at 7물 (the day of the new moon), distance zero. Over the 3 days it was 28, 24 and 13 kg. Hiramasa over 20 kg have only ever come in this core window (the 378-day cross-check).

That said, I do not intend to claim causation. There have been trips that hit the same window where nothing happened, and these 5 fish are concentrated in the year after I changed reels. Which of the two worked, the tide or the tackle, is something my records cannot separate — and that is where this article ends.

For information on Goto and measured tides, see the spot page. This month's Sari window can be checked at this month's tide.

The catches are the operator's own personal records. The dates and catches were checked against the original posts in August 2026, and the old record (March 25, 5 fish in one day) was corrected. This is no guarantee of the same result under the same conditions.

2026-08-15 correction: the multtae in the tide table were off by one on all 3 rows (6/7/8물 → correctly 5/6/7물). The "Record" table and the front matter in the same article were correct; only the table in the body was wrong. Along with that I have corrected "the core was the last 2 days" → "the core was the final day only", the name of the window from "starts at 6물" → "starts at 5물", and, for the trip of 11/30 to 12/2, "12/1 was 8물" → "7물". The basis is the conversion table in data/lunar_*.json and src/tide_score.py, and the check has been mechanized as src/audit_blog_facts.py. This error was found in the inspection made just before translating the article into 5 languages.

ASURA, the boat I was looked after by on this trip, is on hiatus as of August 2026. Reeltime runs out of the same port, but it is a different operator with a different boat and a different captain, and it did not take over ASURA. It is a different boat that goes out from the same port. Current information is collected on the Goto spot page. Please read this article as a record of the time.
